I am Dr. Leslie Sharpe, a board-certified emergency medicine physician, professional photographer, and the creative eye behind Leslie Sharpe Photography. I am dedicated to providing doctors and dentists with lifestyle portraits to help them leverage their brand and tell their unique story through my photography and personal coaching. I am creating this blog today from Kenya with Mt Kilimanjaro just behind me. I am here on a medical mission with a group called Beacon of Hope. We are a group of physicians, surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists, technicians and support staff and are all serving the people in Kenya in an area in Kajiado County called Loitokitok. We are working with a local hospital doing medical screening, clinical work and even performing surgeries for those in need. We are having a wonderful time, doing a lot of teaching and helping everyone that we possibly can.
As you know, I have been writing to you about what your image is. Being here in Kenya teaches us so much. One of the things we think about is why we do what we do. The question I raise is “What is your Why?”. Not many people get to travel half-way around the world to help others and that is part of my Why. When I was a child, my parents would house graduate students from all over the world. They would stay with us for up to a year as they were pursuing a graduate degree. It allowed my brother and I the opportunity to learn about many cultures. We had students from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Swaziland and other countries who shared their way of life as well as what I remember most, their way of cooking. It was a wonderful experience that inspired me to learn about different cultures. As an adult, I started traveling and serving the world-wide community through medical missions. I believe that it has helped me to relate to people all over the world including right in the US. When I meet patients, I have gained the ability to interact with them no matter what their circumstances may be. Initially, this may present a challenge, but as an example, I have found that something as simple as a patient wearing a baseball cap may allow me to connect with them through sports. I think each one of us is able to connect with others on some level no matter what our differences are. Through photography, I am able to show people a little more about the world around them so they may connect with others on some new level. As I continue on my journey, I hope to show you more images that I have taken while abroad.Thank you once again for joining me.
